Chinese have an amazing cuisine, but unfortunately, China is the biggest producer of fake foods. The sad part is the ingredients producers use.
The scandal about toxic foods made in China broke in 2008 after infants died of consuming milk powder “enriched” with melamine powder. Hundreds of babies suffered severely, and many of them died of kidney failure.
But, milk isn’t the only product Chinese “fix.” Let’s not forget the bad safety and hygiene standards. These foods are unfit for human consumption and may cause liver/kidney failure and cancer.
We give you a list of 10 illegally exported Chinese foods. Always read the labels, and buy your food from trusted sources.
Can you imagine buying fake eggs? Several Chinese companies earn millions of selling fake eggs. These are pretty similar to the real egg, but they bounce when hard-boiled. Producers use gelatin, artificial food coloring, water, and wax egg shells.
- Fake rice
This is the most common fake product ever sold around the world. It’s made from potato powder and synthetic industrial resin. The grains are too firm when cooked, and can’t be digested. Eat three bowls of this rice, and you can officially say that you have eaten a plastic bag. Do a simple test. Burn a grain of rice, and sniff. If it smells like burnt plastic, your rice is fake. You can also drop a few grains in hot oil. Fake rice melts at high temperatures.
- Cement-filled walnuts
You can also buy walnut shelves filled with concrete. Concrete bits are wrapped in paper to prevent any odd sound when shaken.
Pork is the most common meat in Chine. But, some producers decided to “fix” pork with “beef extract” and even glaze it. The 90-minute process provides an almost perfectly looking beef that causes slow poisoning, deformity and cancer.
Real mutton doesn’t provide much profit, and some Chinese food sellers sell rat, mink and fox meat. Over 900 people were arrested in police raids, and officers seized 20,000 tons of the meat within three months. Reports show that the meat was “enriched” with E. Coli, and it “seriously exceeded safety standards.”
Fake wine is also common in China. About 70% of all wines in China are made from cheap fruit juice. It’s just the expensive label that sells the product. So, never ever buy wine in China.
You can either find real honey combined with sugar syrup, beetroot syrup and rice syrup or fake honey made from water, sugar, alum, and food coloring.
A kilogram of fake honey costs producers about 10 yuan or $1.60, and they sell it for 60 yuan or $9.50. Over 70% of the honey available in Jinan Province is fake.
- Green peas
Producers use snow peas, soy beans, green dye, and sodium metabisulfite, a type of chemical bleach and preservative. The dye is banned from use as it’s cancerous, and blocks the body’s ability to absorb calcium. You can boil the peas for hours, but they will never soften, plus the boiling water will be unpleasantly green.
- Table salt
It’s a common product in China. Industrial salt causes hypertension, thyroid malfunction, heart attack, and stroke.
Traditional medicine suggests that you use ginseng root more often, but it’s too expensive for Chinese. So, producers came up with the idea of boiling the root in sugar to make them heavy.
Ginseng is 20% sugar, but “fixed” ginseng contains 70 percent.
